In Pakistan, cataracts (a pacification of the lens) are the single largest cause of blindness. Although it is generally related to the aging process, cataracts can also develop after eye injuries.
Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the most cost-effective health-care interventions. The insertion of an intraocular lens through surgery results in almost immediate visual rehabilitation.
Ummah Welfare Trust runs mobile clinics across Pakistan providing free surgery to rural elderly persons. Free surgery is also on occasion provided at the Ummah Children Academy.
The cost of providing corrective treatment for one needy patient is just 8,500 PKR.
